PVDF Membrane Material for Water Treatment
Ultrafiltration, microfiltration and MBR membranes are at the heart of modern water treatment. The membrane polymer decides how long they last and how much water they deliver.

Choosing a Membrane Material
Membranes in municipal and industrial plants face fouling, frequent chemical cleaning with sodium hypochlorite, acids and alkalis, and constant mechanical stress. Materials such as PES, PS and PAN can be cheaper, but they lose strength and flux under repeated oxidant cleaning, so modules must be replaced sooner.
Membrane replacement is one of the largest operating costs of a plant, so the material choice has a direct effect on lifetime cost.
Why PVDF
PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) combines excellent resistance to oxidants, acids and most solvents with high mechanical strength and good thermal stability. Hollow fibers made from PVDF stay strong and keep high, stable flux through years of cleaning cycles.
PVDF also forms membranes easily by phase inversion, giving a uniform pore structure and good permeability. That is why it has become the leading material for UF and MBR membranes worldwide.

For membranes, a high-molecular-weight homopolymer grade is normally used, dissolved at 15–20 % in DMAc or NMP with pore-forming additives such as PVP or PEG, then spun or cast and coagulated in water (NIPS) or processed by TIPS. Consistent batch quality is critical for stable fiber properties.
Global demand for water treatment membranes keeps growing, driven by water scarcity, wastewater reuse, stricter discharge standards and expanding municipal and industrial MBR projects, especially in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which PVDF grade is used for water treatment membranes?+
Usually a high-molecular-weight homopolymer with good solubility. Tell us your process and we will recommend a grade.
Is PVDF better than PES for membranes?+
For applications with frequent chlorine cleaning, yes: PVDF offers much better oxidant resistance and longer service life.
