HFC-227ea (heptafluoropropane, CAS 431-89-0), widely known as FM-200, is one of the most established clean fire suppression agents in the world. It is a colorless, odorless liquefied gas that extinguishes fire quickly by heat absorption and chemical interruption of the combustion process, discharging in 10 seconds or less and leaving no residue.
With zero ozone depletion potential and an extinguishing concentration of 6.5 %, HFC-227ea protects data centers, server rooms, archives and control rooms without damaging sensitive equipment. Is HFC-227ea being phased out? What replaces it?+
HFCs are being phased down under the Kigali Amendment and regional rules such as the EU F-Gas Regulation, but HFC-227ea remains widely used and permitted for fire protection in most markets. FK-5-1-12 is the main low-GWP replacement for new installations.
Which clean agent is best for data centers?+
Both HFC-227ea and FK-5-1-12 are excellent for data centers: they are non-conductive, leave no residue and are safe for occupied spaces. HFC-227ea is the proven, cost-effective choice; FK-5-1-12 is preferred where low environmental impact is required.
